The Consulting Cycle Has Begun–Now What? Inside MBB and the Big 4

A breakdown of recruiting timelines, firm expectations, and actionable next steps for Colgate students.

Consulting has quietly started earlier than most realize. Previously, consulting recruiting began in the fall, meaning juniors would submit applications in August and September for their internships that summer. However, now, MBB start their recruiting process in the spring of sophomore year, requiring resume submissions by March and April. For students interested in the field, understanding the structure of recruiting is now an essential competitive advantage.
What is Consulting?
First of all, what is consulting? At its core, consulting is about solving problems for firms. Firms are hired by consulting companies to answer high-level questions about growth, efficiency, and strategy. With consulting, the work is less about having the “correct answer,” but rather the approach – how you structure ambiguous problems, clearly analyze them, and clearly communicate recommendations.
This combination of structured problem solving, communication, and analytical thinking is exactly what firms evaluate throughout the recruiting process. Fortunately, this is where Colgate students excel. Consulting is not limited to economics majors; Colgate’s liberal arts curriculum equips students across disciplines, from biology to political science, to think critically, approach problems strategically, and communicate ideas clearly.
Types of Consulting Firms
The consulting industry is notably divided into tiers. These tiers not only signify differences in work and selectivity, but also recruiting timelines.
MBB
The most competitive firms consist of McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and Bain & Company. Together, they make up MBB. They focus on high-level strategy work and are highly selective, accepting roughly 1% of applicants.
Big 4
Standing below MBB, are the Big 4. The Big 4 consists of Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG. They combine strategy with operation and implementation work. Additionally, they recruit later in the year.
Boutique Firms
There is a wide range of boutique firms, and they often serve as an excellent entry point, offering early, hands-on, and specialized experience. These include firms such as Oliver Wyman and L.E.K. Consulting.
Recruiting Timeline - Important Dates
The most important shift in consulting is timing. Just like investment banks, consulting firms have already begun recruiting for Summer 2027. Specifically, applications for MBB firms opened as early as January 2026. Deadlines for both McKinsey and Bain fall on March 29, with BCG expected shortly after in April. If you have not yet submitted these applications, don’t stress! The initial application itself is essentially just your resume.
While the application itself is simple, having case prep for interviews is not just a plus, it is essential. Many students assume recruiting begins in the fall, but for top firms, it is largely over by then. But don’t be discouraged, there’s still round 2 if you haven’t polished casing by then for BCG and Bain.
The Big 4 and most boutiques still follow a later cycle, opening applications between August and November of 2026. However, even these operate on rolling timelines, meaning positions are often filled before official deadlines. This simply means recruiting rewards those who start early. So be proactive. Connect with Colgate Alum. and continue or start case prepping. Case prepping alone requires weeks of preparation.
If you don’t feel prepared to submit applications by the March 29th and early April deadlines, all you need is a shifted strategy: target later opportunities like Bain’s and BCG’s second round, the Big 4, and boutique firms that recruit in the fall.

Next steps
Case Preparation: Interviews are standardized across firms and require consistent practice over time. Strong performance is dependent on clear thinking under pressure and less on memorization.
Networking: conversations with alumni and current consultants not only can provide insight, but they can also get you a referral, making your resume have a significantly higher chance of being reviewed. The goal of networking isn’t quantity, but quality. Make connections and don’t be afraid to reach out to the robust Colgate network. View tips here!
Experience: Firms look for evidence of analytical thinking and initiative. This can come from internships, research, entrepreneurial work (like the Thought-into-Action program here at Colgate), or involvement in clubs.
